To get twelve bits of perceived resolution out of eight, the telephone network compresses amplitude logarithmically. This volume defines the piecewise-linear approximations behind mu-law and A-law and turns the segment boundaries, code ordering and bit-inversion conventions into working code. The two laws split by region and appear as separate tables in the same recommendation; the difference is quantified, along with transcoding error, the treatment of silence and round-trip mismatches, each pinned down by a test.
